How to Prepare Your Knoxville Home for Air Conditioning Installation
So you’ve realized it’s time to upgrade your existing air conditioning system to a more energy efficient system. Great choice! You’re making a long-term investment in your family’s comfort as well as the reduction of your energy costs and responsible consumption of energy. While those are all great things there are still a number of things you can do to prepare your Knoxville home before you start the air conditioning installation process.
1. Review the Manual J Heating and Cooling Load
First of all, the AC contractor should have conducted what’s called a heating and cooling load calculation. This complex calculation takes into account the home’s structure, roof, windows, direction and location to determine the size and type of equipment needed. Ask to see the load calculation and have it explained to you. If the contractor did what’s known as a Block Assessment, or did not complete a load calculation at all, we would strongly recommend finding another contractor or calling R & M Climate Control Service Experts at 865-229-6176. Your Knoxville HVAC specialist will be able to give you a full assessment.
2. Clean and Seal Ducts.
Next, have the company clean your ductwork. It’s not recommended to introduce caked on dirt and dust from a decades old duct system to your brand new air conditioning system. The health of your whole system and the quality of the air you breathe begins with your ducts providing clean air, so make sure that they are cleaned and properly sealed by the HVAC contractor. If you can’t remember the last time you had your ducts cleaned or have never had them cleaned, have the contractor do a duct cleaning in advance of your new AC installation.
3. Clear a Path.
Prior to the air conditioner installation you will also want to clear the area where equipment will be installed, and make certain it is easy to access. There are stairs, landscaping porches, decks or other things near the AC, clear the area as well as you can. Ensure the area is clear of yard waste like big sticks and leaf piles so installation is even more stress-free. Also make sure to clear away anything else that could get in your installation pro’s way such as garden hoses, rakes, or children’s toys. Make sure pets are confined so they do not get in the way of the installation crew.
