The Joseph Groh Foundation is a great organization that gives financial support to those in the construction industry who are living with life-altering injuries. Each year the association honors multiple recipients with a grant and in 2016 the Joseph Groh Foundation was excited to announce Adil Karamally as a recipient.
Adil, born in Pakistan, received his MBA from the University of Chicago and afterwards bought ProStar Mechanical Services of Anaheim, CA and earned his HVAC and general contracting license. In 2013, Adil experienced a severe stroke at the young age of 48. He lost the ability to use his left arm and it left his left leg majorly impaired, causing foot drop. Due to the fact he had to use a heavy brace to walk, his muscles began to degenerate and his doctors worried that he would ultimately end up permanently in a wheelchair.
Because the stroke left him unable to work, Adil’s wife, Laila, was their sole source of income, putting financial tension on the couple with a young child in elementary and three more children in college. They became optimistic when Adil was a good candidate for the WalkAid System, a piece of equipment that uses functional electrical stimulation to help a person with foot drop walk again. But when they learned of the cost, Adil and Laila realized they were not able to afford the apparatus in addition to the comprehensive rehab that Adil would need so he could understand how to use it.
Luckily, a specialist at WalkAid told Adil and Laila about the Joseph Groh Foundation and, due to the incredible grant, Adil got the WalkAid System and has been overjoyed at the success. His muscle is no longer indicating atrophy and is actually starting to regenerate, bringing positive thoughts back to Adil and Laila.
